My son attempted a hard reset however, all that appears on the screen is the Apple now. Can't turn on or off. What do we do now.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Well off to Genius Bar, the computer doesn't recognize the iPod connection. Thanks. I have seen this before & not real sure what he has done.
Did you let the battery fully drain and then charge and try again? That frequently works.
Yes, the batter was completely drained (since its been sitting around & wouldn't shut off). I plugged in in yesterday to see if I could fix the problem. The apple on the screen goes away sometimes but the unit stays on. Since the computer doesn't recognize the unit, I'm guessing everything is completely wiped out.
