Q: Does iPhone (4) take over Airport on eMac?

I'm totally confused about this so bear with me.  My son gave me an iPhone 4 yesterday and connected it to my eMac Wifi base.  Now I can't find any record of my eMac on my ATT Diagnostic Site and there have been four new access numbers added since I last looked including the iPhone on the next to last place.  I'm still trying to connect my wireless iMac to my printer (again)  The printer has lost contact with my Base Station (Airport) on my eMac.

I've downloaded the iPhone User's Guide but it'll take me weeks to absorb what I want to use from the Guide's 156 pages.  I did find this which is what worries me.  (edit -- I tried to paste the quotation but it didn't take.)

----SETTING UP AN AIRPORT BASE STATION -Page 131 - iPhone Users Guide---

What concerns me is that when I used Disk Utility to check my eMac disk the permissions are OK but Verify Disk gives me the message: "invalid extent entry"  then "The volume needs to be repaired -- Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit."

I read somewhere that I can use my install disk to repair this.  If so, what keys do I use to enter the disk?

Any help is greatly appreciated.     ....goldie

    Hi Goldie,

    "Try Disk Utility

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

    3. Click the First Aid tab.

    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

This did help me to better use my Install Disks but it didn't solve the problem.  The Disk Utility on the IDisk wasn't able to fix the problem either.  Looks like that problem may be what's messing up my conection to the WiFi but it doesn't seem to bother the rest of the operation of my eMac.  All files and web connections are working just fine.  Strange!  I'm running the DU again on the HD to be sure I know where the error occured,  Perhaps that will help.

    This is the DU readout.

    Verifying volume “HD X10.4.11”

    Checking HFS Plus volume.

    Checking Extents Overflow file.

    Checking Catalog file.

Tough to tell what it could mess up, but you must repair the Disk before anything else.

You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

Did the Safe Boot, rebooted to regular HD and outcome the same so will go to Disk Warrior.  You said I'd have to have the CD to download/use DW.  Which CD do you mean, the Install or a DW disk?  I have the eMac backedup on an exterior HD if that's what you mean by "another boot drive".  I do have the Install CD.

Gotta take a break, back in couple of hrs.               ...............goldie

If If it boots from the external that'd work without the DW CD/DVD.

    BD---

I downloaded Disk Warrior to my eMac 10.4.11 Backup disk and it wouldn't let me correct the Computer copy because it said that was the startup disk even thoough I started up on the BU and was trying to correct the eMac Computer HD.

I did correct the iMacIntel on the BU disk but it doesn't show on my Startup Disk Selector.  The Startup Disk Selector shows several selection options for OS 9.2 on the Intel Mac.  I never use OS 9 and don't want to get involved with it.

Right now I'm Repairing Permissions and Checking Files on the 10.4.11 and will do the Hardware check as soon as that's finished.  I have a lot of research to do still so I can't give you a "Solved" check yet but will as soon as I know I have it nailed.

Thanks for the help and I'll be back when I get a better grip on this Disk Warrior.

Sorry to hear, but it wasn't booted from the external for some reason, try it again & under the Apple at top left>About this Mac, should show the real Startup Diisk.

    BDAqua---

Yahoo!  Jumboya! Hot-Diggidy-Dogs! and   HOORAY!!!!  WE did it!

After numerous false starts and hours of frustrtion, I finally got it right.  Some of the mistakes I made were:  Trying to use Disk Warrior from the Startup Disk; trying to use DW when I had it downloaded to several other disks; forgetting to download it and trying to use it directly from the dmg.  Scheesh! how dense can somebody get?    BUT, in the final analysis, as my HB used to say, "...when things don't work 'READ THE INSTRUCTIONS"''' (150 times if necessary) .

Not only did I (and Disk Warrior) fix the disk problem, I found some other leads as to why I can't get this Mac to print as it used to.  (I was reading a lot of "instructions")  Maybe I'll find the right instructions to read about that printer.

La, la, la, la, la!  on my way to bigger and better problems.

    Thanks again........goldie
