How to turn off notifications in Mail?

Question

How to turn off notifications in Mail?

Good grief in 10.8.2 how do you turn off the pop up notifications every time an email comes in? Or ALL notifications for that matter? This happens for system software updates from the App Store, which is equally irritating.

Open System Preferences > Notifications > Mail and untick everything to turn off Mail notifications

Use the Notifications preference pane in System Preferences to make changes.
