Q: macbook air won't charge & no light on charger

I charged 2011 Macbook Air yesterday and it was fine last night and again this morning. Then, when it was running low on battery today I plugged in the wall charger (which is a new one I got in July) and suddenly my screen went black and the charge light wouldn't come on. So, I unplugged the charger and then my screen came back. Plugged in charger again and screen went black again. I restarted my computer and still same problem. I even shut down and rebooted but same problem. Of course I didn't back up my files so I scrambled to transfer some to our portable hard drive but I was on reserve power and the transfer did not complete. So, now I have a dead computer. I even just tried the charger of a friend with a MB Air but her charger didn't work for me either. So, now I have just plugged my charger in with the hope that it will mysteriously start working again -still no light showing.

And ideas? I live in southern Mexico and closest Apple Store is in Mexico City...not very close to me :-(

I don't believe it either.  3 mins warming by hair drier didn't appear to work...  Left for a showe and as luckily I'd left the power on and connected I get a red light on the charger saying charging... Yahoo!  But why?

@John Galt - that did it for me!

    My symptoms were:

    • System had unexpectedly shut down.  On restart, all of the following symptoms appeared.
    • Battery not recognized
    • When connected to my AC adapter, the LED light did not show.
    • CPU fan was spinning like crazy.

Thank goodness!  Not sure what would have caused the problem in the first place, but glad it's solved!

JohnnyCotia's advice about sitting on the brick (or at least warming it up) worked perfectly for me. After about 10 minutes of sitting on the brick, the orange light came on. This would explain the apparent randomness of the charging.

Wow, thanks JohnnyCotia. This morning the adapter that was replaced by Apple less than a month ago started doing the same thing (which was why the other one was replaced). I tucked it under my fluffy sleeping cat and connected it to the laptop and... well, what do ya know, it's charging. AMAZING!

I personally cannot believe that sitting on my charger for nearly 5 mins just fixed my solution. Seriously this is the strangest thing I have ever seen. It works and thats all you need to know! Thank you to everyone who did this and replied and thanks to the original idea!

I can't believe it, but sitting on the brick for 10 mins solved the issue. Hope it won't happen again =)

I wonder if heat is truly the issue or if you all just have line noise. Apple's MagSafe troubleshooting page suggests unplugging the adapter for a minute or so and then plugging it back in — if that works, it means you had electrical noise and keeping the adapter unplugged lets the noise dissipate. Perhaps when you guys are warming the adapter you're really just getting rid of that noise.

My Macair same symptoms, and it was cold in the house, but instead of warming the charger I just unplugged it for about 30 minutes as it had been plugged into the same outlet for days...Must have been the "noise" for after plugging back into the same outlet it, behold, it worked.  Must be a "Union" charger...had to have a coffee break.

I have that problem. try resting the charger on your bed and or on a soft cushion ( plugged into the mac ) that's what is working for me and I have had my mac for 3 and half years. hope this helped.

I am traveling across Europe with the nearest store about 2 countries away and I found this answer of the SMC reset. I tried it and it totally worked. My MagSafe 2 light would not come on and the fan was running at high speed. This new travel (Apple brand) plug is just two weeks old and I could not believe it died. It was working perfectly all day and then suddenly the fan was running and no MagSafe light. I tried new sockets and new circuits as some trouble shooters listed. But the SMC reset was perfect and all is restored.  Thanks!

    laugh a minute with Apple

20 minutes online chat doing SMC - failed and booked appointment with apple store

So I looked at this forum - great stuff and have been laughing hard for the last few minutes.

Sitting on the adapter to warm it up and doing RPAM at same time worked for me - December in Vegas ain't that cold but rubbing stomach and patting head then swapping does it every time

    i did the following

    Resetting the SMC

Step 01. Shut down your MacBook.

Step 02. Connect the MagSafe power adapter into your MacBook. If it’s already connected, leave as is.

Step 03. Press Shift + Control + Option + Power keys at the same time. 10 secs

Step 04. Release all the keys from the keyboard.

Step 05. Press the power button to start your MacBook.

    Resetting the RPAM

Step 01. Shut down your MacBook.

    Step 02. Press and Hold Option + Command (⌘) + P + R.

Step 03. Turn on your MacBook while holding the keys (Option + Command (⌘) + P + R).

Step 04. Keep holding the keys (Option + Command (⌘) + P + R) until your MacBook restarts (You will see the grey screen appears before it restarts.)

    Step 05. Release the Keys.

Step 06. If you hear the startup booting sound for the second time, that means the PRAM has been reset. Done!
