Error loading Turbo Tax 2012 on Macbook (2007)

I am receiving an error when I try to download Turbo Tax 2012 to my Macbook. All the system requirements match OK (64 bit, and OS). I just recently updated to OS 10.6.8 and updated all my software. Any idea what might be going on?

This is the error I receive:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “TurboTax Deluxe 2012” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)

Thanks!

Monsieureden... If you got a copy from the library, that is a copyright violation. You should not be installing the software unless you are the legitimate purchaser. The library is equally at fault. Since you did not purchase a copy, please do not burden our support staff. It is unfair to others who paid and are trying to use the service.

Turbo Tax 2012 will not run on a mac with the Intel Core Duo . Turbo Tax 2012 only runs on 64 bit macs. You can find out what chip you have by clicking the apple icon on your computer (upper left corner) and selecting "About this Mac". For further instructions read this -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696 . Why in the world Turbo Tax would do this to 32 bit owners is beyond me. It's bad enough they make you pay for a brand new copy of Turbo Tax every year. They at least should have had the courtesy to put the 64 bit system requirements for macs in bold on front of the box. Perhaps, it's time to try H&R tax software...better than paying for a whole new 64 bit mac to run TT. Has anyone used H&R tax software before?

We did. See my posts at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4578359?answerId=21010917022#21010917022&ac_cid=tw123456#21010917. We could have written to 32 bit for a very small number of our customers, but we also would have compromised a much better (faster, easier, more streamlined) customer experience for 95%+ of all the other Mac customers.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I'm impressed that a VP these days would any bother. Kudos for that. But most people just want products that work reliably. I'm not necessarily interested in "streamlined" or "super fast", especially when it comes to tax software. The previous versions of Turbo Tax were more than user friendly and fast enough. There's a significant number of users who still have 32 bit machines because Macs tend to "just work". What's done is done though. After 8 years, I'll have to figure out something else.

Thanks again for trying help

Thanks Macster77.. As a Mac fan too, I like the fact that they "just work". Perhaps "faster, streamlined" are not the right words, but one simple example of the dilemna we faced is this. Since we wanted to be available on the App store (and now are, which is a very important distribution channel), we had to go with the tools that support 64 bit only. That's just one example. Anyway, I appreciate your comments.

Hi Bob,

That is really a poor decision. I know plenty of folks with 32-bit intel macs that have used turbotax for years, myself included. As someone that is very familar with software development I find it hard to see why companies claim what you are claiming about 64-bit vs 32-bit. For this tyoe of application if it was properly developed there would be zero reason that a 32-bit app would not perform just as well. If 64-bit is so much better and a necessity, how come the windows version is still x86 32-bit?

That said wha bothers me the most about this is that I did not find out until after I bought the software and tried to install it getting that nice NO sign on the application on my MacBook Core Duo 32-bit with 10.6.8. The problem is, Bob, that whoever did your pacakging did not update the system requirements! I have the retail copy and it clearly says that my MacBook meets the requirements. It states 32-bit x86 cpu and Intel based processor with 1GB RAM and 10.6.8 or better. I have 2GB and 10.6.8.

Now I have to switch to something else or install the bloated version on my PC. Yeah I know you offer a refund but if the box was correct at retail I would not have purchased it.

Very dissatisfied customer here. A customer that has been using Intuit software for nearly 20 years.
