Video noise reduction for iMovie 6 or QT files?

I am desperate to find a preferably free download of software for video noise reduction in iMovie 6 or Quicktime dv or mov files. This must be useable on OS X 10.4.11.

Can anyone come up with an answer or suggestions?

Many thanks

Terrific discussion so far! Sorry if I didn't plant this in exactly the right place.. (there's so many options!)

OK, the problem I have Klaus is film grain. The piece I'm working on was originally shot on high speed 16mm film stock (20 years ago) to give slo-mo.

I've now made it even slower using iMovie 6 fast/slow/reverse effect, but this unfortunately enhances the grain problem as every speck moves slower..

I used the bright/dark to darken it for other reasons which again made things worse.

I've used 'Neat Image' to great effect on static pics but all I can find by them for video ('Neat Video') has to work through either Premiere or FCP.

So...I'm hoping someone has an idea how I can clean this up in iMovie 6 (or a QT file?), without losing definition.

(Klaus mutters something about women never being able to make up their minds.....) 👿

😮 Well. Really. Hmmm. I see.

(Getting even will be so much fun!) 😁

@ prof d hall:

I use iMovie HD as well, but it does have its limitations as far as editing/enhancing possibilities are concerned, but maybe Klaus has an idea.

As I see it nothing can be done about the quality of the original film stock (short of re-processing and feeding each frame through Photoshop!), but much depends on how it was digitised, which for movies is an expensive excercise. We are not talking about analogue video-8 here.

Digitising movies is an art form. Ideally each frame has to be digitised one at a time so that the settings can be 'individualised'. Digitising old commercial movies for DVD distribution costs millions.

As for iMovie 6 and its successors it is a question of 'GIGO' - Garbage in, Garbage out.

How was the 16mm film digitised? Was it done to your satisfaction? Could doing it again improve matters?

Thanks Klaus

Not surprised by what you say, a pity. The original film was grainey but not so apparent. When transferred/digitised it was still apparent but as explained:- having slowed it down further recently (and intentionally) it seems to show up more. I dont think re-digitising would help.

I would really appreciate hearing if anyone else has any ideas/views on this..
