Q: Iphone 5 says "device unknown" when doing the setup

I try to do the initial setup of my Iphone. When I get to the part of inserting a sim card, the phone "searches" and after a while he says: device unknown, and that I have to contact an apple store...

Anyone knows what this means?

iPhone 5

It means you need to contact Apple.

Where exactly did you get this phone?

Yes, I contacted apple , but they didn't know very good what it was neither..

I've got this phone from the Dutch apple store, and I'm located in Canada right now.

This isn't going to be helpful but I'm experiencing the exact same issues with my iphone. The phone was purchased in Hong Kong and I'm trying to get it to work now in Canada

Ok, but does it work in Hong Kong? Because maby there's just something wrong with the Iphone itself.. and with wich provider are you trying?

I spent 2 hours at the phone with Apple friday, and they send my file to an engineer who's going to look in to it. So I'll hoop that they will have an answer next week

yea, the phone worked in Hong Kong. actually, when the Hong Kong sim card was still in the iPhone it worked fine. I'm trying to get it to work with Telus but when I changed the nano sim card and plan over it kept "searching". Then I updated the iPhone to 6.0.2 and now the "devince unknown" thing comes up.

I checked to see if it was a provider plan issue but when i swapped back to my old phone, there hasn't been a problem conncting there either.

Hopefully Apple can figure out why it hasn't been working out!

I'll send my phone in if necessary after the holidays

Yeah that's my plan too. But I want it to work in the Netherlands AND in Canada because I'm going back to europe in 7 months.. I'll keep you up when I hear something from Apple...

Wich Iphone 5 do you have? Also the A1429 GSM?

Exactly, I'm constantly between the two countries so if it would work that would be ideal.

yea I believe it's the A1429 GSM. there shouldn't be a support problem right?

No because Telus uses CDMA and GSM, so it would only be a problem if Apple 'blocks' Telus or Bell with the A1429, or the invers. But that's stupid so not likely. I think there's a problem with our iPhone, because apart of you, I never heard anyone with the same problem.

Anyways I ordered a Rogers simcard, just to test if it works with them because they are only GSM, but in theorie it changes nothing

this is what they just send me:

    Hi Robert,

From what we were able to find out, it looks like the micro SIM in your phone is not seated correctly. Please take the phone into your nearest carrier store and have them check the SIM card to make sure it is seated properly. If this still does not work have the carrier replace the SIM card.

    Thanks Again,

    Lorraine

but I think that's not going to work, because I already tried it with 2 different simcards, and so have you with your simcard from hongkong and the Canadian.

been away but had the chance to meet up at the genius bar. they managed to solve the entire problem, same sim card, same phone. all I know that happened was that the staff working there forced the phone to go to the home screen (this was all done in the staff area of the apple store so I'm not exactly sure how it was done) and then turned the LTE off and manually selected a carrier. The phone works fine now and the staff said it should continue to work fine as long as i don't turn on LTE.

And it still works in Hong Kong?

i haven't had the chance to try but based on what i've been told, it should and LTE can be switched on there as well. there is the chance that i may have to re-activate the phone each time by putting in the hk sim card each time after a major system update
