There are independent iPad repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipad repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPad serviced by an unauthorized shop, you will get no further support from Apple.

I don't know what country that you are in, but in the US the price for repair (i.e. replacement) for the iPad 1 is (from here) $249, and here in the UK (from here) it's £206.44

I did a Google search and found a number of links. There are companies that will repair the screen for around $100 USD. There are links on how to do it yourself and where to buy the parts.

I suggest you might do some exploring on Google.
