Why is searching mail impossible with Mountain Lion

Before upgrading to Mountail Lion all you had to do to find an old e-mail was type the person's name. Now it sometimes finds them, sometimes doesn't. Seems to only search e-mail addresses of people I've sent e-mail to - doesn't seem to find them - even if I'm typing in the exact e-mail address - more often than not. Why the change?
