I can't delete stickies from my desktop. I have read answers that say to close them out with the small box in the upper left hand corner, but there is not box there and I have looked very carefully.

Sticky note selected. Please note the note's title bar. It has a little square on the left and a triangle on the right.
I am familiar with what you are referring to, however, it is now appearing that way on my computer. Here is a screen shot of my stickie note.
That's a widget sticky note.
Hover the mouse cursor over the sticky note. Press alt/option key, you'll see a black circle with a X inside. Click on the circle. The sticky note will vanish.
