Be sure to perform the SMC reset correctly before giving up:
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
- Shut down the computer.
- Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
- Remove the battery (to remove the battery - click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro)
- Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
- Release the power button.
- Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Still having problems? Replace steps 6 and 7 with the following:
- Reconnect MagSafe power adapter.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer,
- Then reconnect the battery.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
- Shut down the computer.
- Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
- On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Dec 22, 2012 3:52 PM in response to John Galtby Thrums1,Thanks John,
It seems as if there is a faulty connection - not from the charger but from the MacBook end. I tried cleaning the connections but I am not sure what to use to clean those properly. It is intermittent so it may be something is not quit connecting.
Currently it is charging but if I remove the charger and put it on again chances are it won't connect, It is very hit and miss, mostly miss. But as I say it not the Magsafe.
Any advice would be welcome.

Dec 22, 2012 4:31 PM in response to Thrums1by John Galt,Check the photographs on this page, especially Step 7:
Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
Look for pins that are stuck. Don't scratch the gold plating.
They recommend using a cotton swab or (dry, soft) toothbrush to clean the port and connector. I would avoid any kind of fluid, or toothpaste.
Try flipping the adapter so that its connections are reversed 180°.

Jan 2, 2013 3:31 PM in response to Thrums1by Thrums1,I have now tried everything and it has stopped working. I am told buy a repair shop it might be either the MagSafe board or the logic board.
Can anyone give some thoughts on these to other possible cause/solutions please.
Thanks
