shuffle is not visible after connection

I installed a new version of itunes and now neither of my 4th generation ipads will appear after I connect them to my computer. The icon appears, it syncs, then says disconnect after syncing, and the icon disappears. The version is 11.0.1.12.

If I can't fix this, i'd like an older version of itunes that works with my shuffle.
