How do I pair the remote app on my iPhone to apple tv 1st generation

How do I pair the remote app on my iphone to control apple tv 1st generation. I had to disable it because it was not responding, now I am having trouble re-pairing it

Use the connect to iTunes option, enter the pass code when prompted.

Where is that option because I have selected Remotes from the General option on settings where it says iphone and ipod touch remotes but Add Remote is not highlighted so will not let me add iphone. I am sure that is how I did it last time

The setting is in the remote app on your phone.
