I use several.
Quick Time Player 7
FCPX
Handbrake
iSkysoft Media converter
MPEG streamclip
Pavtube Video converter
Rewrap AVCHD
Turbo264 HD
VLC
Xilisoft Video converter
Each has its own pro and con. Some are not really to be seen as converters.
Many can be downloaded and tested for free. None is really expensive
