This is the Leopad/10.5.0 to 10.5.8 forum.

Might Try this...

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.

Then move these files to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist

Reboot & test.

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

I held the shift key down for three minutes and the screen stayed grey. A couple of minutes after I let it up the log on screen appeared, I loged on and now I have three more question marks where there use to be icons and the programs are missing. I have no idea where the disk utility is. I then held the key down with a plastic clamp and booted the system up, after about twenty minutes it went to the log on screen. I still have all those question marks and they cannot be removed.

Do you have the 10.5.x Install Disc?

You can use Disc Utility from that...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Well there we are bumbed out again, no I do not have the disk and I cannot find it in the Apple Store. There is only one person I know that has a Mac. I will check with him and see if he has one. Thanks for the explicid directions I need that. I went into the start up disk and it listed OS X 10.5.8 as the system.

A Disc from another Mac won't work if a Gray Machine specific Disc.

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
