When I do the usual search in my apple mail, desktop version, I get no results.

In other words:  Search for John Smith in ALL, nothing

Search for john.smith@aol.com in ALL nothing

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:

    ls ~/Library/Mail/V2/*/*/.dontIndex | grep -v Deleted

Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

Your email address(es) may appear in the output, so anonymize before posting.

Thanks, I'll put this aside if it happens again.  Meanwhile, I thought I'd just try repairing permissions since I hadn't done it in over a month.  It was a lengthy repair, but when it was over, search in mail worked again just fine.
