Purchased books for a Sony Reader. They are epub file extension. I imported them into iTunes library. I went to Options and verified media type is book. I added them to my iPad. They show up in the iBook app but it can not open them. It states it is formatted incorrectly, or is not a format iBooks can open.

It sounds like the books have DRM. Most purchased best selling books do. They can normally only be read on the device or app stipulated by the store that sells them. Check the help for the place you bought them to see what it says.
Books you purchase from the Apple ibookstore can normally only be read on an iOS device.
Ps try the app called "bluefire reader"
I got the Bluefire Reader app and want to say thanks for the information. It worked for me. I tend to buy from a few other sites and some of the books are drm-protected. I could read them in my adobe digital reader app on my computer but they would not transfer to ITunes. However they would work with the bluefire app and I am grateful.
iBook can not open epub books.
