My ipod is not recognized on left side column in library list, however is shown in right hand up corner. How can I sync music?

My ipod is not recognized on the left side column in my library list but does show up in upper right hand corner. Is it supposed to do this? And how do I sync music then?

If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar.
