Q: When will Apple iPhoto/Aperture support the new Leica V-Lux 4 camera RAW format ?

I just bought a Leica Vlux-4 and found that the current verisons of Aperture and iPhoto do not reconize the RAW files like they do for earlier versions and all of the Canon & Nikon DSLR's.  I see from the support doc that Apple supports the Vlux-1 and 2, so when will RAW support be added for the Vlux-4 ?

I dont want to move to Lightroom but it already supports the Vlux-4 camera !

Thanks.

Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Only Apple can answer that question - this is an User-to-User forum - wedo not know. Use the feedback form to send feedback to Apple: Apple - Aperture - Feedback

Your Vlux-4 comes with Lighroom as raw processing software - so use it, to do the raw development, until Apple supports the raw format. But I will not even guess, how long this will take, since the Vlux-4 is the direct successor of the very popular Vlux-3, that is still not supported.

I don't know what Apple's parameters are for adding RAW support, but when I got a new Canon a couple of years ago and found that the model was not supported, I filed feedback with the specific camera model and lo and behold, about 2 months later, there was a RAW update which included my model....

You were lucky, babowa. After two years I am still waiting for raw support for my favorite camera, a Lumix FZ 18 - the first Lumix with 18 times Mega zoom. If a camera is technologically very different from the main stream, Apple may skip the model for raw support, since they usually have to reverse engineer the raw decoding and only can start, after the camera has been released. For example, the monochrome models are not supported by Apple. I have never seen Apple-raw support for a camera that does not use a Bayer-array sensor. And I doubt, Leica will support Apple in this with the Vlux-4, since they have a contract with Adobe to include Lightroom with the camera for free.

while this all may be true, why would Apple support other Leica cameras, including the Vlux-1 & 2, and then just stop ?  And also the very similar Panasonic FX200.

while this all may be true,

it is all speculation, and we are not supposed to speculate here; Apple does not publish the reasons for missing raw support, and for the Vlux-4 it is early days yet. There may very well be a raw update including your camera soon. The only difference I see, is that the the Vlux-1 & 2 did not come with Lightroom included, only with PSE, and the support stopped, when Lightroom was included - the direct competition to Aperture.

Send feedback to Apple to let them know!

I think you have hit the nail on the head

the support stopped, when Lightroom was included

That makes sense. I was not aware that Lightroom was included since I've only had Canons.

Übrigens: fröhliche Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr (nachdem ich - ausser technischen Problemen -  in dem anderen Forum nicht mehr teilnehme).
