A Few iPhone 5 Problems

I am new to the iPhone. In the past I connected my iPhone 5 ti y MBP and updated it that way. I was told that with the latest (the one before the latest) that you do not have to connect your iPhone to the MBP and go through iTunes anymore to upddate to the latest version. I saw that there is a new update 6.0.2, but when I go to Settings---General---Software Update it says iOS 6.0.1 Your software is up to date. why is it saying that when there is 6.0.2, right? I have never had this issue before so I am curious what is going on. Does the iPhone still need to be connected to iTunes to update? I thought I read with update 6.0.1 that it was fixing something so that the iPhone did not need to be connected in order to update. why is my iPhone 5 saying my iPhone is up to date when it says 6.0.1 is the installed version?

Thanks
