I am working on a project which is a mixture of text and images. When I insert a new picture all the pictures further down the project move out of alignment. This means I have to go throught he document re-aligning the picutes with the text. What am I missing?

It can be confusing. Your pictures can be Inline, such that they move along with the text, or they may be Floating such that they stay fixed to the page and text flows around them.
Further, the pictures can cause text to move out of the way, or not. This feature is called "Object Causes Wrap" in the Wrap Inspector.
You can install fire walls to prevent disturbing text and graphics further into the document by: Insert > Section Break.
