I bought what was supposed to be an iPad 4 with retinal display at BestBuy. How can I determine if that is what I got? I found serial and model numbers but can't figure out how to use them to get more specific info on my iPad.
try visit http://www.whatismyscreenresolution.com from your iPad. The site should report your screen resolution and for iPad retina it should be something like 2048 x 1536

Yes just checked on my other device and it displayed incorrect info, the site is not optimised

I just received an iPad for Christmas from my wife. She is very non-technical and did not know exactly what model she bought, so I had the same question: do I have a retina display?
As best I can tell, only the new 4th gen models have the retina display, and only the new 4th gen models have the smaller new "Lightening" connector instead of the older, wide 30-pin connector.
So, knowing if you have a retina display seems to be as easy as looking at your iPad's connector. If 30-pin, you do not have retina display. If Lightening connector, you do have retina.
Not quite true, NevadaDad. The 3 gen iPads (march 2012) have a 30pin connector and retina display. I have one.
So, if you have a lightening connector, you *definitely* have retina display. If you have 30-pin, you *might* have a retina display.
Unless you have the iPad mini where you have the lightning connector but no retina display.
For regular sized iPads, yes if you have the lightning cnnector you have a Retina display.
The difference between a Retina Display and a regular display is very obvious to the naked eye. If you can see the pixels on the screen from a normal viewing distance, it is not a Retina Display. If everything on the screen looks crazy crisp, it is a Retina Display. You could take a screenshot on the iPad (hold down the home button and lock button simultaneously), and find out the resolution of the screenshot. It should be 2048-by-1536 pixels for a Retina Display.
