ipod shuffle 2gb not being recognised by PC nor iTunes

I have bought a new iPod shuffle but iTunes and the computer do not seem to recognise it. I do not want it to sync automatically and I wonder if I pressed something incorrectly when having a go the first time. I have rebooted the PC, I have tried different ports, I have looked at the help manuals (and they keep mentioning "Devices" on iTunes which I can't see).

I thought I was going to set this up for a Christmas present - and time seems to be running out.

Can anyone help, please?

I have checked everything out and found that the inserted cable needed an extra push (when it had felt as though it had gone in properly!) see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3572

I have now got all my tracks on it!
