i registered for iCloud and my contacts disappeared from my iMac
They are still on my iPod Touch. I also have a back up in Time Machine, but have been unable to restore the contacts. Help!

If you go to Contacts (on your Mac) preferences > accounts and untick Enable this account next to your iCloud account. Do you see all your contacts?
If yes, export your contacts and import to iCloud, then delete local ones and use the ones on iCloud, this will keep your contacts in sync on all your iDevices.
No, my contacts did not reappear. When I hit the untick Enable, the pop up asked if I wanted to save contacts or erase them from my computer. I clicked save...but since there are no contacts, that appears to be what was "saved"
Since you still have your contacts on iPod I would try to export these to a file and then import to iCloud...
There is a bunch of apps that can help you with exporting your contacts to a vCard format (vcf) file, just search iTunes store for "export contacts".
