IMac doesn't sound anymore

My brand new IMac has no sound, not even chime at startup. Tool bar icon moves but no sound. Keyboard keys show activity but no sound. System preferences set correctly, the internal speakers, the headphone jack and internal mic don't work, There's nothing plugged in to the ear phone jack on the back.

What to do please?

Zeppelino,

Some applications (especially games and browser plugins) tend to change your default sound settings.

To recover them go to your Applications/Utilities folder and click on Audio/MIDI Setup. Under 'Audio Ouput' make sure your format settings are at 44100.00 Hz. If they are not, simply click on the 'format' pane and choose the appropriate figure.

What worries me, though, is the absence of a startup chime. When I did lose my system sounds a while back, I would still always have a startup chime---this is a diagnostic alert that everything is ok with the system.

In any case, since your Mac is brand new, you can always avail of the return policy that comes with it, if you can't recover the sound. No sense trying to "fix" a brand new system when you can have it replaced with a "working" one.

Hope this helps.
