how do i transfer everything from one macbook to a newer one?

I have an older macbook (2008) with snow leopard which was damaged in a crash. It still boots up, but the mouse pad no longer works, etc. I bought a new macbook pro with 2012 (with USB 3) and want to transfer everything from my old computer to the new one without using external drive. So far, there's lots of info on transfering from PC to Mac, but how about from Mac to Mac?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Thanks everyone, those replys were helpful. However, in the setting up a new mac guide, it says that when transfering from an old mac to a new one, you need firewire to connect them. My old macbook doesn't have firewire - it has USB 2.0 and an ethernet port. Can I use either of these to connect directly from my macbook to my new macbook pro (which does have a firewire port)? What if i get a USB to firewire adapter?

I can't remember any Mac that didn't come with Firewire. However, the older ones had 6-pin FireWire (400) connections. The new ones have FireWire 800 connections. There are FW 400 to 800 cables.

If you really don't have a firewire port or don't want to buy that cable, you could clone your old Mac to an external and use that to migrate via USB.

You should be able to use ethernet and transfer over a local network.

  1. To transfer from a Mac via network (Ethernet or wireless) Ethernet is 2-3 times faster and much more reliable than WIFI.
  2. Make sure OSX on the old Mac is the most recent version (via Software Update).
  3. If it's Snow Leopard, be sure it has the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
  4. If it's Leopard, be sure it has the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Leopard.
  5. If it's Tiger or earlier, you cannot use your Network. Either use Firewire (above), or make a "clone" backup on an external HD.
  6. Connect an Ethernet cable between the Macs, or connect both to your wireless network, and select From another Mac.

1. Download Carbon Copy Cloner to your 2008 MacBook.

2. Connect your 2008 MacBook to your new MBPro. The Firewire cable, with the appropriate connector on each end, should cost you about $5.

3. Start up your 2008 MacBook.

4. Start up your new MBPro in Target Mode (by holding down the T key while it starts up).

5.Using CCC, clone the entire hard drive of your 2008 MacBook to your new MBPro.

Done!

(you said you wanted to transfer *everything* and if you do as described that's what will happen).

Thanks everyone, very helpful. 🙂 I've connected the ethernet, opened up the migration assistant on my source mac, but I cannot hit the "continue" button to actually begin the switch as my mouse pad is damaged and the "left click" option is disabled (yes, I've attached an external mouse, and it still doesn't work). I can open buttons or applications with the "right Click" option, when it lets me but the windows that come up in the Migration Assistant won't let me hit the "quit" or "continue" buttons by using the right click - it won't register at all. Is there a way via the keyboard or anything else to highlight those buttons or access them without the "left click" option?
