All of the app icons on my iPhone have disappeared...why??

Help! I ran an update on 6 apps in the app store and some were sat at 'waiting' for 5 hours. I tried to click on them but nothing was happening, so I switched off and then on again. This seemed to erase the icons but they could still be found using the spotlight search. I went to the app store but it wouldn't let me delete and reinstall as it needed the icon to do this, so I did a screen layout rest on my iPhone to see if that would help.....er, no - now ALL of my purchased iPhone app icons have been completely removed from my home screen. WHY???

Try resetting the phone:
Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears. No data will be lost.

After that, try going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout again.

I have lost my original "Settings" app. Can I just download a new one from the App Store requesting "iPhone Settings? or should I do a reset and hope my Settings app reappears? It sounds like I will need that "Settings" app if I do a reset.

You can't redownload it since it didn't get deleted. Do a spotlight search for "settings," then go to General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout after tapping on the search result for Settings.

I'm not sure what you mean by anonymous, though... your current user alias seems anonymous enough, and the hosts will usually only allow a name change if personal information is revealed.
