How do I find the names of my photos on an iPhone or iPad?

Why am I unable to see the names of my photos on an iPad or iPhone? When I go on vacation I transfer my photos to my iPad each night but I wish I could rename them right then and there so I don't forget what I've photographed but for some reason this is not an option? I downloaded iPhoto for the iPad but no dice. This seems like a pretty basic feature not to have.
