Can't log on

I bought a new iMac I went through the normal set up and I connected a external hard drive to transfer all my data from my air, after the transfer finished the next part of the setup came for logging into iTunes I entered the username and password and it stayed up saying talking to apple I left it for 5 minutes and it said the same thing, so I restarted it. Upon restart it skipped the setup and went to the log in menu I attempted to log on with the correct password but it says it's wrong. I thought I was crazy so I went to my air and typed in the same password and it worked. I don't know what to do this is a present for my wife and wanted it all setup I can't get into any of the user accounts and apple support is closed why isn't the password working?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.
