There is a KB article that states which builds were shipped with which machines, but it is still kind of vague when it comes to 13" vs 15", etc.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159

I have a Mini that supposedly shipped with that same build, and I updated it without a hitch.

My only suggestion, at this point, would be to clone the hard drive to an external (make sure it boots the machine), then boot to the Recovery HD and reinstall Mountain Lion.

When complete and it runs the setup assistant, Migrate from the external clone.

The plot thickens...... according to the OP (one of his posts on previous page) he has:

Software OS X 10.8.1 (12B2100)

And, according to the link you posted for the builds, the 12B2100 is for the 13" rMBP.

So my links to the updates should work? But they don't....

I think I'd take it to Apple and let them sort it. Installing updates should not have to involve cloning, using recovery, etc.

Well, according to what you're saying, your current build is 12B2100 and, since you haven't updated, that should be the original version.

However, that is the build the late 2012 13" MBP came with - see this link (which was posted here previously):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159

You should have 11E2068.

So, the question is: how did you manage to install a build that is not for that machine?

When you are dealing with the new machines and the download-only OS, you cannot use just any OS version - you have to use your machine and the recovery method which will install the exact version yours came with. Did you do any OS installs since getting the MBP?

If you still plan to call Apple, make sure you mention your machine model, the OS build number it came with and that you now have a build for a different machine installed.

My only suggestion at this point is that you would have to use your recovery partition, boot into it (pressing Command + R during bootup), erase the drive and let the recovery process reinstall the correct build version.
