Problems setting up AT&T on iPad mini

Hello and happy holidays!

I received the iPad mini as a gift and have been trying to connect it to my AT&T account. Unfortunately when i try to punch in my information it won't allow me to put in my pass code and SSN. Is this a known or common problem? Also is there a way I can fix it without having to call or go to a store?
