I have an Early 2011 and a 3rd Gen Apple TV, and I don't have the airplay icon on my desktop. Is there a solution for this?

Only MacBook Pro supports mirror with early 2011, all other Macs are mid-2011 onwards. A third party app called airoparrot, www.airparrot.com will work for older models.

Correct, IF you have OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. If you have 10.7.whatever you will need to get ML from the app store. My early 2011 MBP mirrors great with it.
