I just bought a Toshiba External HD. I dont have an airport. The hard drive has a USB cable. I just want to back up my Macbook with the USB. I dont know how to do this. I thought you needed to use Time Machine but it never shows up and a back up device. I tried disk utility and it didnt show up there either. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?
iPod touch, iOS 4.3.3
Does the new Toshiba show up on the desk top and Disk Utility? If not you may have to try another cable or USB port. If it does, have you formatted it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility?

Have you tried different cables and USB ports? Can you connect it to a powered hub? Can you power it separately? Can you connect it to another Mac?
Foe one reason or another the MBP is not recognizing it.

it came with only one cable and onle on end will work on it. I cant power it seperatly and im the only one who has a mac.
There is a connectivity problem. If you have other peripherals that connect to the USB port, do they work? Do you have a PC handy where you can connect it to see if the Toshiba is functioning?

everything works. I can hear the disk spinning and it conneced just fine to the pc
When you connect it to the MBP, you hear nothing?
By any chance does the USB cable have two USB connectors? If so plug both of them in.
Just to make certain, do you have FINDER Preferences set to recognize HDDs on the desktop?
If it does not show up on the desktop or Disk Utility, then it suggests that there is a problem in the MBP. I then would take the MBP to a repair facility with the Toshiba HDD to diagnose the exact problem.
