Q: iPhoto 9 now repeatedly causing reboot on Macbook with Mountain Lion

I just upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro with 4GB ram and the i5 processor to Mountain Lion when I got an iPhone5.  Now, every time I open iPhoto my Mac reboots.  This is new, and unwanted teritory for me.  Crash report first portion here:

Same thing just happened to me. Before the reboot I couldn't edit then a restart of iPhoto seemed to fix it. However, after a simple edit my MBP 3,1 suddenly rebooted. Just before it came back I got the unfamiliar blue screen that said it couldnt restart the first time. Once up I went to to Disk Utilities and everything seems fine with the hard drive. I dont use iPhoto that much, but this seems very odd!

Maybe the iPhoto Library needs housekeeping, See here (read thru to the bottom): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638

Update to my issue.  I tried rebuilding the library and doing some other things.  I even decided to spend $50 and upgrade my DRAM from 4GB to 8GB as a mid-life upgrade.  Kept getting panics, and some of them not even with iPhoto.

So, I decided that since I was still under warranty to bring it into an Apple store.  The guy took the machine, looked at the crash reports, ran an in store diagnostic tool that I didn't have and diagnosed it as a bad Video RAM.  Bad news is that it is hardwired to the logic board so I need a new logic board and they didn't have one in stock so I decided to leave it there for a day or two until they can make the swap out.  Good news is it is under warranty still so a $526 bill for parts and labor costs me nothing.

He also told me that you can still get to the old Mac Diagnostic tool like what used to come on the orange disk with the older Mac's by holding down the D key on start up.

I hope my issue isn't from the VRAM. I just had the logic board replaced a few years ago. Thanks for the info. I'll be on the lookout for other issues.

Given that iPhoto triggers a switchover to the discrete GPU on the twin-barreled 15" and 17" MBP's I'm not surprised that it also tickled the bug that found the bad VRAM.

My iPhoto setup went a bit loco this afternoon, even causing an automatic library rebuild; having been following this thread, I sat watching in speechless anxiety. But fortunately it was just indigestion caused by something the iPhone threw at it. Guess 8MP HDR pix can be a tad filling...

Yes.  I even had tried to disable auto graphics switching to see at one point to see if that would isolate it, but that didn't really help.  My iPhone 5 upgrade seemed to be the tipover point, but then once it started happening it started to feed on itself a bit and spread to not just iPhoto, but to other high demand processes as well.   Store has not notified me computer is fixed yet.  Will call them today to see what is going on.

You have bad VRAM/GPU - see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 - it shows up only in the mid-2010 15" models.

If you act quickly, Apple will replace your logic board at no cost and it will 'fix' the problem that you're having.

Uh.  Clinton, read the whole thread next time.  I started it.  Then I just posted an update a few days ago - PowerBook is at store getting a new logic board for free.

Oops - my bad - just took a look at the LATEST posts - didn't read but the first and a couple of the later ones. When I saw the kp, I knew what was wrong. Glad for you the Apple is helping you out on this one.

    Regards,
