Is your MBP early 2011 or later and is it running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or newer?  It needs yes to both to support mirror.

If it is the OS you can purchase from the app store, if it is the MBP being too old a third party app called airparrot, www.airparrot.com can help.

I purchased my MBP this past November (2012) and it's running 10.8.2 and I just updated the Apple TV, home sharing on the same account for both is turned on, and they're both on the same wifi network. Thanks for the suggestions though! If know any other techniques I can try, let me know!

    Thanks again

Firstly reboot the router, MBP and ATV, it can help.

Mirror can be affected by other household appliances or other wireless networks.
