Apple recommends 2GB minimum RAM but I think 4GB RAM more realistic.

Another option, which is what I did on our two computers, is to partition your hard drive, which allows you to retain Snow Leopard for older applications and games. You can then install Mountain Lion on the new partition. To partition, restart to your Snow Leopard DVD or the disks that came with your computer and use Disk Utility to create the new partition.

When you install Mountain Lion, there is a button which allows you to select which disk to install to.
