My iMessage on my ipad sends from my apple ID email and not from my phone number. Adding a phone number is not even an option. My number is listed on my AppleID account and I've logged in multiple times but still sends from email. How do I fix this?

My iMessage on my ipad sends from my email not my phone number. There is not even an option to add a phone number in settings. My phone number is set up with my apple ID so it should show up but for some reason it doesn't. I've restarted and logged in and out of my apple ID multiple times and the phone number option still doesn't show up. How do I fix this??
