How can I manually add music to my iPod touch?

Hi, I can't find an option to manually choose what music to upload to my ipod touch. I have a lot of music files on my computer that I don't want to be on my ipod so really don't want to use sync. I was also ultimately hoping to store my music files on an external drive and am assuming that if I did this and used sync I'd lose my music when charging my ipod?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Ipod is OS6.0.1

Itunes I just updated to v 11.0.1 (12)

PowerBook, G4 5,8

Thank you very much for your help, but there is no option to "Manually manage music and videos" or "Manually manage music" in the ipod's summary in itunes. The only options are regarding how you'd like to back up.

I've tried plugging in my ipod nano 3rd gen and I can still manually manage music with this, just not with the ipod touch..?

Once you plug in your ipod click on your iPod in the top right like shown below

User uploaded file

from there scroll down to options and once you see Manually "Manage Music and Videos" tick that then click sync in the bottom right.

To manually add music just select the songs and drag them over to your device. I'm assuming you have the newest version of iTunes so it may be easier to go View > Show Sidebar then it will look more like the old version and easy to manage!

I Hope this helped

I know how to put music onto your ipod touch WITH computer.

Make sure that your music files are media files (so the regular orange blue player), after this being done, make sure that the music is in an open folder or on your desktop at ALL TIMES. For IOS5 or above, you would have to convert it into the media section on the top left side of the itunes place, it will have an indication by if you drag your song icon in there it will light up and glow blue a bit. Once you drop it in there, you have to sync your device, making sure that the songs are on your desktop and in an open folder (not a closed one). If this doesn't work, than just take a bunch of music files (not in a folder) and drag them everywhere in the itunes place, trying to insert them into a place, making sure that it lights up blue.
