Need help: our computer will not boot up and only shows Apple icon and Spinningwheel. I've attempted to start up in safe mode by pressing the shift key after the tone. However it will still not boot up. What else can be done. Thank you.

First see Try Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, then see Use fsck if necessary. For that, see the directions for starting up in single user mode.

But not a good sign that it won't boot in Safe Boot. Did you give it long enough? It will take much longer than a regular boot.
Thanks for responding. How do I get into desk utilities if the IMac will not boot up? All we get is the apple symboli and the progress wheel.
Insert your original install disk and when you get to where you see the menu bar, click on utilities, and the select Disk Utility from the drop down menu.

I tried inserting the snow leopard 10.6.3 in the dvd slot but it will take the disk. I can not insert the disk.
Boot into single user mode, CMD-S at the startup chime. Then follow the directions from the link I gave for using fsck.
