I need a fake internet explorer?

Help,
In order to access a website I need to use the Internet Explorer browser above 5.5. Too bad their is no such thing for a mac user! I've heard that another browser like Shiira can fake out the website into thinking I am using IE, but that didn't work. Other than using a pc emulator to install IE, what other options are out there?

ibook, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.

To reinforce what Tom said, many real estate sites use ActiveX which will only work with Windows and only with Internet Explorer 6 for Windows. The creators of the real estate web packages are blocking out all non-Windows users and all users of alternative Windows browsers such as Firefox and opera.

There is a way to change Safari's user agent, which is the calling card Safari uses to identify itself when it accesses a web site and you can change the user agent to IE/Win 6. This will only change how Safari announces itself and it will not make Safari emulate the browser whose user agent you are using. If you want to test this out for yourself, you need to enable Safari's debug menu either by downloading the free utility Safari Enhancer or by opening Terminal (in the Utilities folder in Applications) and pasting the following into it, followed by pressing return and closing Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

Changing the user agent may get you past the front door, if the site uses ActiveX, you will still not be able to actually use the site.

Thanks so much, I wonder why the block on non-windows users? Is there any way to petition this monoply? Sounds like something that should be brought up to the SCC. I am a novice to the way activeX works, but how is it possible to access this from say a non-windows based PDA like a blackberry? Like I said, I'm not sure how this works, but very interested on finding a loop hole!

The new Intel Macs are capable of running an Apple program called BootCamp, which will allow you to partition your drive and run Windows (as fast or faster than on a PC) on one partition, and OS X on the other, with no spillover. So you could access your real estate programs on the Windows side, and then re-boot into OS X on the other partition and use it for the rest of your work.

Hope this helps,
Miriam

Afterthought: this page should be of interest to you, it bears directly on your problem,

Yet another afterthought: this program will allow you to run Windows in parallel on your Mac without having to reboot. However, I worry about its permiability, it may allow Windows viruses to penetrate the Mac OS, although this has not been demonstrated.

ActiveX is a proprietary technology owned by Microsoft and they actively encourage people to use it because it then locks people into Windows and Internet Explorer for Windows. There is no law that says web sites must be programed using only open standards such that the sites would be available cross-platform.

There is probably a special feed tailored for the Blackberry in the same way there are specially designed pages for cell phones, but I don't know the details of how the sites communicate with Blackberries.

By your username (realesate pro) it appears you are in the business. If so it's important to know that the real estate business seems particularly joined at the hip to Microsoft Windows. A majority of MLS software, servers, etc., use Microsoft's ActiveX technology and thereby lock out any other computing platform. We've seen a good number of real estate agents posting here about problems using Macs to access MLS databases and such. The administrators of those databases turn a deaf ear to those users and, apparently, are quite hostile to them.

Good luck.
