I have a belkin wireless card and a b and w mac running mac os x 10.2.6.

Every time I put the card into the slot the computer freezes after it gets done with the gray apple and the thing spining blow it.

Can anyone help?

Yeh,

I looked up pci belkin cards and they had a sale at
staples for 10 dollars a card. Bought a bunch of
them. It worked fine after I upgraded my AirPort
software. I think my linksys card will work too. It
doesn't say mac support like the belkin one did but I
think it might.

This is just an average b&w G3 PowerMac.

Do you happen to recall the model of Belkin card and the version number?

This may sound naive, but does it matter into what slot the Belkin card is inserted? My graphics card is in the 32-bit slot, but the other three are available. However, the Belkin card is not recognized. Am I misunderstanding that all I have to do is insert an F5D7000 (v.3) Belkin PCI card under OS 10.3.9 in a B&W G3 and it will be immediately recognized? Where? BTW, I found one of these cards at my local Office Max, but they weren't on the shelf. I had to ask for them and was told they were on closeout, but stored "in back." They charged me $15 for one.

There is no need to put anything other than a high-performance graphics card in the top slot. This is not a high-performance card.

You generally do need to press the tiny CUDA Reset button (nearest the battery) after you make any hardware change. This forces your Mac to re-derive the Device Tree (map of what Hardware is where) at the next startup. The next startup will take a bit longer while it does this -- do not be alarmed.

If it is still not recognized, check with "About this Mac" More Info to see what it says is in that slot. If you have never inserted a PCI slot card before, the amount of force needed is startlingly large -- but the card makes a very satisfying "thunk" when it bottoms in the slot.

Thanks, but I guess I was asking more if I could put a 32-bit card in a 64-bit slot (PCs have PCI and ISA slots). BTW, the answer is yes, but there were other issues involved here. I was treating this Belkin card like it was designed for the Mac and OS X - i.e., plug it in and it works - when, in actuality, it was made for a PC, meaning I had to first find the drivers (on Belkin's web site), then install them, THEN insert the card. Once I got this sequence correct, everything worked just fine. I'm not thrilled with the Belkin GUI, but what can you say for $15.

You may be right.

The Belkin web site appears to have changed since I needed to install my drivers (for a Rev. 3 F5D7050 card), but the main page clearly states, "Works with... Mac OS X v10.2.6. with AirPort installer 3.0.4, or Mac OS X v10.3"

However, I'm running 10.3.9 on a B&W G3 and, IIRC, the card was not Plug-and-Play like the above implies. As I wrote in my earlier posting, I had to follow the PC-style procedure of first loading the correct drivers, then installing the card.

Things may be different with 10.4, though.

The f5d7000 mentioned above also seems to work plug & play under Mac OS 10.3.9 with up to date airport drivers. I ordered exactly that model because it was mentioned on this board. Initially it did not work because I had it seated improperly (stupid...I can install and remove PCI cards in my sleep, but for some reason this time around I blew it). Once I had the card in place, booting up OS X brought up a message window announcing that a new third party Airport card was installed, and prompting for the password to my airport network. It was that easy.
