Two monitors with Macbook Pro

I'd like to setup 2 Asus 25.5 external monitors with my Early 2011 17" Macbook Pro on Mountain Lion (10.8.2) with AMD Radeon HD 6750M / Intel HD Graphics 3000, 8GB Memory. I've been reading that I might be able to use the Diamond USB Display Adapter or a Matrox product.

It appears the Matrox is preferred over the adapter but it's also more expensive and I'm not sure which one to get. When I go through the configuration (macbook Pro, early 2011, 2 displays), it gives 4 solutions (Dualhead2go digital ME, DP edition, triplehead Digital SE and DP edition).

Is there a less expensive option that works for connecting 2 external monitors? And/or does anyone have any feedback on the above 2 solutions?

Thanks in advance.

You can get a VGA or DVI splitter to use both displays but they will just mirror each other. It won't work for two extennded displays.

It is possible to connect two apple displays via thunderbolt however it is difficult to use 3rd party monitors. It may or may not work if you use this product http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/digital_se/. I will look into it more then update this.

Update: Looks like it is for windows only. There may be a chance you can connect them by USB but it would be very unlikley.

Thank you. I just bought the Matrox DualHead2Go Digital ME. I will post next week when it arrives if it worked or not.

I found this video showing the Diamond USB Adapter Pro setup with a Macbook Pro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIVZI1cFiAw

However, that was the only positive thing I found when searching for the Diamond Adapter with the Macbook.

I opted for the DualHead2go as it had more positive results.

We'll see.

Kelly,

I finally received my adapter. It works, but it makes the two monitors one large screen. The dock can't be centered on one or the other, it's either to the far left of one, far right of the other or right in the middle, which is annoying. I also cannot figure how to open applications in one monitor or the other and they open in the middle spanning the two monitors. Again, very annoying.

Let me know if you received yours and how it's working out. I have emailed support, so we'll see. Otherwise, I think I'll return it. It's just not what I was looking for.

Thanks.

Yes, I'm having the exact same problems. Quite frankly, this device is not performing as I expected. I initially contacted Greg in Tech Support, but he really didn't offer much help, basically stating the reason for most of these problems has to do with Apple not allowing them to access certain areas of the OS. After days of frustration, I finally emailed Matrox the following and asked them to forward my concerns to their product engineers.

----------------------- Email to Matrox -----------------

For the most part, my Matrox DualHead2Go Digital ME is performing great. There are only a few issues I'm having that I can really use your help. I currently have the DualHead2Go setup as 2x1 for display 1, which I'm assuming are my two LG monitors, and 1x1 for display 2, which I think is my MacBook Pro 9,1. In terms of OS, I'm running Mac OS X Mountain Lion, version 10.8.2.

So here is where I'm having problems.

  1. Although MOST applications respect the Matrox Desktop, and will stay within one of the two monitors (unless resized), I've found that nearly ALL of the Adobe Creative Suite applications (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) do not. For whatever reason, the only exception seems to be Adobe Acrobat. From a productivity standpoint, this is a real problem because it defeats the purpose of being able to use multi Adobe apps at the same time on different displays. BTW, I'm currently using Adobe CS 5.
  2. As you know, with the dual monitor setup nearly ALL Apple and many third party dialog boxes show up in the middle of both monitors, between the monitor bezels. This makes viewing the dialog boxes very difficult. This behavior is especially problematic with apps like Time Machine. I understand that part of this may be due to restricted access of the Mac OS, but it would be great if you're engineers could find a way around this problem, much like you've done with the dock.
  3. When using several of my Adobe graphic applications, I've noticed that the DualHead2Go is displaying a sort of canvas looking texture for solid color areas of designs I'm working on. This appears to be more prevalent with color builds.
  4. Normally, I operate my setup with my MacBook Pro closed. Occasionally, I'll have wake from sleep issues, which are only resolved by opening my MacBook Pro and letting the Matrox device reevaluate my setup.

Again, this is a great device and I really applaud your engineers for coming up with a viable multi-display solution for MacBook users, but addressing the issues above would make it even better. Please let me know if you can help me resolve some or all of these issues. For what it's worth, I'm also happy to become a Beta tester for any new PowerDesk software or Apple compatible display devices. I look forward to hearing from you.

Not yet, but it's only been a few days.

BTW, I just got off the phone with OWC Tech Support. Wow! What a company. The guy I spoke with was great! I only wish I could remember his name. Anyway, he said the Newer Technology device would likely operate the same as the Matrox and he confirmed what Matrox said in that Apple limits what third part companies are able to do with certain aspects of the OS.

Suprisingly, the ATI HD5770 graphics upgrade kit in my old MacPro worked great with multiple displays, Apple dialog boxes, and even the Adobe apps. I really wish their was a solution, especially with the dialog boxes. Maybe frameless monitors. 🙂
