I am having the same issue, however, it only occurs when trying to update using 3G data. The weather app works fine only over WiFi.

I have an iPhone 4, 16GB, running ios 6.0.1

All other apps work fine over both WiFi and 3G. It is only the native Weather app that will not function over 3G.

I have seen numerous posts regarding this issue in various forums online.

The following steps are what I have done to try and resolve this issue, but to no avail.

1. Restart phone.

2. Hard reset.

3. Reset Network settings.

4. Restore from Backup.

5. Comletely restore to factory settings.

6. Toggle on/off 3G data.

7. Toggle on/off airplane mode.

If anyone else has another suggestion, I'll give it a try.

Thanks much.

UPDATE....

Just purchased new iPhone 5 today...it is running ios 6.0.2 (the recent software update that was issued only for iPhone 5 users and iPad minis)...

Same exact problem exists on the NEW iPhone 5. Native iPhone weather app will not update over the 4G LTE network. It will only update (or let you ADD a city) over WiFi.

I must conclude, that this is either an ios 6 specific issue (my weather app on my iphone 4 worked fine until upgrading to ios 6) OR it is an issue with the AT&T and Yahoo weather (they provide the app's weather data) servers. Hmmmm...One can only guess.

As was the case before, all other apps work fine...

Can anyone shed more light on this issue?

Thanks much.

UPDATE #2....Eureka?..

Okay, have discovered that in ios 6, location services for the native weather app MUST be turned on for it to update over 4G (or 3G). Settings/privacy/location services/weather app turned to ON.

This was not the case for ios 5.

Hope this info helps anyone who is having this issue.

Thanks everyone,

joe

If this solution fails to work for anyone, please let us know.

I'm having the same exact issue as well on an iPhone 5 received a week after release with firmware 6.0 on AT&T. LTE isn't available in my area so it doesn't update or let me add cities on AT&T's fake 4G (3G) network. What's interesting is I did a settings reset (network settings reset before to no avail), and the initial cities (Cupertino and NYC) in the weather app updated fine. Even though those cities updated fine without wifi, the app would not let me search or add any other cities.

With further testing while off wifi, the weather app updates sometimes. Other times, there's a blank purple or blue screen without any weather icons or text to indicate the update fail. Other times, there's old weather from days back and text on the bottom saying Update failed, last updated whenever.

I tested it on my boyfriend's Verizon LTE (iPhone 5, 6.0), and it says update failed as well. I just wanted to add my two cents hopefully somebody out there will have a fix because this is unacceptable coming from Apple's first party stock application.

Having same problems with my iphone 5. The app will update - sometimes, and, with the location turned on, it almost always has the updated weather for my home location; but, I'm not allowed to add any new locations because the search function can't find them. I went to the Apple Store this morning (at the suggestion of the AT&T guy) -- what a huge waste of time. The guy who was supposed to help tried to explain the whole thing as a "temporary network failure", whatever that it is supposed to be. He even checked his own phone while I was there and he had the exact same problem. In other words, Apple has no answer. My solution - download the free Weather Channel app - it works fine and like the Apple app is supposed to work. Next thing - I want to delete the Apple app from my homescreen - I hate having an icon for a nonworking app.

So that's it? No more responses in 7 days? Has everyone's native weather app magically fixed itself? Mine sure hasn't. I've been following the the discussions on MacRumors and iClarified, as well as this one, and it seems the only people still talking about this are the iClarified folks, although the people at MacRumors have more in-depth information.

Good Morning h5518a4...

No, the "update failed" situation with the weather app has not been resolved. It just seems that more attention has been given to this problem at the links that you mention in your post.

I have been following this problem for over a month now.

I am user k9buddyjoey at the MacRumors link.

As you can tell by reading my posts, I have pretty much tried every tip that there is out there to fix this problem.

Also, as I have said...the problem is not with your phone....it lies somewhere with AT&T's network, or there is sort of breakdown between AT&T's network and Yahoo's weather server.

There seem to be no reported problems with Verizon or Sprint. My sister is on Sprint, and I have several friends on Verizon. NO issues there.

Do you have an AT&T store near you? If so, I encourage you to make a little visit there. But, I will warn you...Chances are better than good that they will claim to know NOTHING of the problem. They will ask you if you have updated to the latest software...they may offer to do a "hard reset" or some other form of action to your phone. Don't let them...it is pointless. Please try and direct someone there who may have some sense and an open ear to this and the other aforementioned threads. Or call AT&T (umm....good luck with that one, but please try).

Finally, it is commonly known that the next update to ios 6 will be released sometime in the near future in the form of ios 6.1

What updates it will bring fall into the realm of speculation and hearsay. There will no doubt be updates to the Maps App, and an update to Passbook among others. Personally, I am not a user of Passbook, and don't plan on using it to purchase movie tickets with Siri and Fandango...However, THAT IS NOT THE POINT. The point is...That there are many people out there who DO plan on using it..and it should work across ALL platforms as should all native ios 6 apps.

How many times have I read...or been told...that "Weather Underground" or some other weather app is better?

Again..NOT THE POINT. People pay their hard earned money for a flagship communicatin device that should work as advertised.

It is important that anyone who is following this thread, or the others at MacRumors and iClarified, continue to press AT&T to at least respond to these inquiries, and not remain deaf to its customers.

Thank you,

joe

Hi all,

Just want to let you know this isn't restricted to AT&T. I'm in the UK on Vodafone network and have the same problem with the weather app, as does my wife. I can only think the Yahoo infrastructure can't cope with the traffic as the iPhone population continues to grow. This would explain why it works sometimes and not others. I would suggest the AT&T thing is probably a red herring. Would be interesting to get an official response from Apple or Yahoo on this thread.

I doubt it would be Yahoo's fault since the weather works perfectly on Wifi. Here's something else, asking Siri about the weather while on 3G works. But just trying to update the weather app—no bueno. Maybe somebody somewhere blacklisted the specific URL that the weather app uses. I don't know what it is, but I'm just throwing out ideas. Oh and as of this writing, my weather app has last updated on 3G at 2:59 AM. Weird how it likes to work correctly on 3G in the middle of the night.

The Iphone native weather app is not working properly, not updating, confusing some times. Is anyone else experiencing this?
