I've recently added 2 users to my Mac. Everytime one of them signs out or we switch away from her account to some other user's account, all her preferences and settings erase. For example, she adds an application icon to the dock, then it disappears. Or she sets Mail to not collapse conversations, then it recollapses conversations. I suspect this is a permissions issue, but I don't know how to cure it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hello Jonathan,

Is anything at all saved, like pics, bookmarks, etc.?

Is it possible the other usernames were edited in the Finder?

It seems that documents, pics and other files get saved. But settings -- like bookmarks, dock icons and other preference type elements -- get knocked off. Where would the other usernames be edited in the finder? Thanks for any further help tryingt to figure this out.

I don't think rename is the problem, but it can mistakenly be done by simply hihlighting that home folder in the Finder & renaming like any other file/folder, but it's a no-no.

Log into one of the Problem Accounts in Safe mode...

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.

Then move these files to the Desktop for now...

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist

    Reboot & test.

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

OK, first things first. I went to confirm that the new users' home folders are all still named as they were originally named. They appear to be. So now, I will move on to trying what you suggest. Thanks for the guidance. Back soon.

Uh oh. I might have spoken too soon. I rebooted in safe mode (while holding down the shift key), and it started to rebuild in gray radian, but it's been about 3 hours and the dark gray bar has stalled about one third of the way across and it's been spooling. Any advice? Should I just let it keep going and hope it picks back up?

When Safe Boot does that it generally indicates serious Hard Drive problems.

Power down & try this & report the results.

Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...

    /sbin/fsck -fy

Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.

(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

OK. I will try that. First I'm letting Applejack run in deep clean AUTO mode, then I will restart and try your suggestions. I' hardly surprised. We're running OS 10.7.5 on a several year old Mac Pro tower with 4 users. Lots of time & activity on an aging processor. Thanks for the further advice. I will keep you posted. Keep hope alive!

I've verified and repaired all disk permissions, but the problem is persisting. So I moved on to your suggestion to move certain files from the Library folder to the desktop. Interestingly, none of the files you told me to move (listed beloe) are there to begin with! Could that be an indication of the problem? Any further recommendations?

Voila!!! Fantastic! Working like a charm across the board. Thank you so much for the patience and sage advice!

Final question: what do I do with the files I dragged to the desktop? Can I trash them?

Great to hear, thanks... you can trash those files we moved now!
