It's possible to upgrade the 6400 to OS 9.1.

You currently have OS 8.0 & you can download a free upgrade to OS 8.1 at Apple's site.

The next level is OS 8.5, however, you have to buy an OS 8.5 install CD & you can download a free upgrade to OS 8.6 at Apple's site.

The next level is OS 9.0, however, you have to buy an OS 9.0 install CD & you can download a free upgrade to OS 9.1 at Apple's site. You can go to OS 9.0 directly without installing OS 8.5/6.

Before installing OS 8.1 & higher, you need to reformat your HD from HFS to HFS+.

A great source of info on the 6400 & 6500 is at The 6400 Zone at http://www.zone6400.com

The 6400 has no video acceleration, and will be slow with modern Web pages. If you have broadband/DSL, you can tolerate it for a while. If you use a faster Mac elsewhere, you will quickly hate the slowness of screen re-draw.

You may need to boost your memory to get good performance with that Mac. Maximum is two 64 MB modules, and they must be exactly the right kind.
