iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
'Command-C' on the keyboard will copy any selected text (or a selected file)
'Command-V' will paste it somewhere else.

In general it is command-X and command-V. What are you trying to cut and paste?
If you're talking about cut and paste as you would do with files and folder on a Windows box you do it in a round about way.
Either Copy ⌘C, (Yes copy not cut), and then move, ⌘⌥V (a variation on paste ⌘V).
If you're a mouser.
Right click the File and choose Copy from.....
The right click the folder you want to move it to but hold down the option key and Paste item.....
...will change to Move item here.
Going forward, you may draw future help from this Apple keyboard shortcut list.
Command X doesn't work. See the other response below. Command C then Command/Option V works.
Command-x does work, just not in Finder. The OP didn't indicate what he was desiring to cut.
