localhost:/ I have no name!#

when i go to start up my ibook this message comes up. I've had a search and couldnt find anything.
Can anybody help me on what i need to do?

iBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The "I have no name!# " is not a message as such (but it does indicate a problem!). Does this appear as white type on a black screen? Do you also see "Welcome to Darwin", or any other text at all?

well its no longer coming up, I have tried running the disk utility but my hard drive is not mounted and it wont mount when i click the mount button. As i have all my files backed up, I was going to re-install mac os x but my hard drive does not show up at all.
Whats wrong with my hard drive? Do i need a new 1? I'm out of warranty so where can i purchase 1 from?

Well, let's try to find out, shall we?

Are you able to start your iBook in Single User Mode? See: Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode.

If you can, then run fsck to check your disk and let us know the result. See: Mac OS X: About Using Disk Utility and fsck for File System Maintenance.

i have ran the fsck and everything seems fine, but when it rebooted still not starting up. Ran it through to the mac os x disk and still no destination volume/no hard drive there.

also, i have tried to boot it in safe mode and the following appears on a grey scren with a smaller box in the middle saying you need to restart you computer. hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button. and then followed by this in different languages.
Over the top of this is text saying the following:

So Safe Mode gives you a kernel panic? This message is covered here: Mac OS X: "No Driver for this platform" Message.

Since you were able to start in Single User Mode to run fsck, do it again but don't bother with fsck this time. Then type carefully:

ls -anol /

Copy down the results carefully and post them back.

Well, I'm not sure what is going on here. Tiger didn't come out until April 2005, yet your kernel is dated Dec 2003. Many of your other files are "too old" to be right. Where (and when) did you get this iBook? Was it new?

</pre>You definitely are missing /Users: that would explain why you can't get to a login screen. Most of the others ought to be there.

I think your only sensible option at this stage is an Archive & Install. See Mac OS X : About the Archive and Install Feature. Don't choose to preserve User Settings: there aren't any.

Whether we can recover any of your files will have to remain an open question. I don't see where they might be anyway. But post back after the A&I (and before applying any updates) to let us know what is happening.

Hi Michael,

I did exactly what you said and its come back on 😀
I do have 1 worry though. I have had all sorts of problems and this is the 3rd in the space of a week I havent been able to start it up and have had to reinstall Mac OS X.
Is there anything I can do to ensure it doesnt happen again?

also, i bought my ibook g4 from the apple store online back in april 2004. I was unsure why they were files from 2003. At least it's back up and running, I'm just a little worried it wont stay for long.

So you did an A&I and it is now working? Well that's something? Can you still see your files?

If you look at the root directory of your Hard Disk, using the following command in Terminal (you'll find this in /Applications/Utilities) do you see the same as in your post above, or do you now see something more like mine? Note that if you haven't yet updated to 10.4.6 again, the dates and sizes will be different to those in my post.

Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window followed by a return:

ls -anol /

Don't bother posting all of that but I'm interested in the differences from previously.

Well, since we don't know how it happened, it's a little difficult. But you should definitely run Disk Utility, select your boot disk, and check what the "S.M.A.R.T. Status" says at the bottom right. You could also run "Repair Disk" again, by starting from your Install DVD, but it probably won't say much at the moment.

Hi Michael, yes when i copy ls -anol / into the terminal is looks like yours.
There does seem to be a problem, the SMART status says failing. What shall I do?

SMART status says failing

Oh! I am sorry. If the "S.M.A.R.T. Status" is failing you'll need to get the disk replaced very soon. If you have Applecare, you need to telephone them for what to do. Otherwise you need to take it to an Authorised Apple Repair Shop to get a quote.

In the meantime you may want to back up as much as you can, because you will lose everything from that disk.

Michael,

Thank you so much for your help, i really appriciate it. I will get a new hard drive asap.
I wonder if you can help me, I live in Birmingham, England, where can i find my nearest Authorised Apple Repair Shop? I dont really want to go to the Apple Store in Birmingham Bullring as I have had a few bad experiences with them.
Also, I'm a bit unsure as to what hard drive specification I am looking for, could you help me?
