How do I import music from itunes, windows media player or my music onto a ipod?

I have just got Now 83 on cd and want to download it onto my iPod touch (4th gen ios 6.1), I have iTunes and have made a playlist with the songs on, I have ripped the files onto windows media player and i've got the songs in my music folder. What do I do now? I've tried copying the playlist and file but it doesn't work so... (10 points if good answer)😕

iPod touch, iOS 6.0.1

I think we need to start from scratch here.

  1. Have you installed iTunes (the programme) onto your computer?
  2. When the answer to that is "yes", have you imported the album into iTunes, either by File/Add Files to Library (if the songs are already somewhere on your computer) or by importing from the CD into iTunes, using iTunes?

The usual procedure is to follow the points I've made above. Then, you wouldn't need to create a Playlist for the album, it would be in your iTunes Library - as an album. Just play the album. No need for Windows Media Player.

Likewise, Syncing the iPod to your iTunes Library is simple and straightforward. But not with Windows Media Player.

You can only Sync your iPod with one iTunes Library. So which other Library have you already Synced to?

Was it:

  1. another Library on this same computer? If so, then providing you have imported all the music on the computer into this iTunes Library, a Sync will remove everything from the iPod and put on what it finds in the Library. Since you've imported everything on your computer into this Library, you should not lose any content.
  2. another computer that you own? If so, then import that music in to your current Library. One way to do that is to copy the music from the other computer onto an external drive and then use the external drive to import into the second computer.
  3. Someone else's computer? If so, then presumably, it's music they've purchased that your trying to keep. You're not entitled to keep music that you haven't paid for, but someone else has. That would be regarded as stealing and although it probably isn't stated policy, that's probably why you cannot sync with two Libraires.

If this is yes, you will get 10 points.

Don't lie.

No - exactly the opposite.

You cannot sync the music on the iPod, from the iPod to iTunes.

You have a choice:

  1. Follow lllaass's tip, mentioned in his post of 22:35 this evening. Not my preferred method, because I believe it becomes difficult to manage with a large complicated Library and an absolute nightmare if you ever need to Restore your iPod. Not to mention moving everything to a new iPod, eventually. But don't let me stop you.
  2. Take my advice. Put all your music etc. into one Library, using an external drive to move songs from other computers to the one computer and iTunes Library you intend to use. That way, you have one Library to work with (which you should then regularly back up onto the external drive, so that if your computer's drive fails, you can restore your Library from the most recent back up). Play counts, Playlists etc. etc. are all there, in one place. Less likely to lose some content, compared to having stuff all over the place.
  3. Assume that I am lying...

Huh? What's that all about? I'm trying to help you. I have quite a few points to my name, you can see for yourself. Those points are awarded by people who feel that I've helped them, I don't put them there. You will find that I can be very caustic in some of my posts, but that's with people who deliberately come here to cause trouble. Unfortunately, there are many of them. Their posts usually start with;

  • I hate Apple
  • I don't like iTunes
  • I bought an iPod

  • they have a user name such as "Fred Linux 985"
  • ...and they have no points

(I have nothing against Linux).

Don't ever say that to me again.
