Periodically, I use LogMeIn to access a MBP that I have at home.
I would like to keep the MBP clamshell closed but would still like to be able to access it.
Is this possible?

I am not using Mountain Lion, but on earlier versions of Mac OS X there was an "advanced" option under the energy saver preference pane to "wake for Ethernet network administrator access." I would try checking that box and see if it achieves what you want.
I've tried that but unless the MBP is "hard wired" with an ethernet cable, the MBP won't wake up.
I guess my question should be - Can I close the clamshell without putting the MBP to sleep?

As far as I know, no. You must close it and the reawaken it, and even then, it typically won't work unless it is connected to a keyboard and monitor. Apple tech note:
