Installing Windows 8 on a new iMac from an .iso file

Hi,

I would like to install Windows 8 on my new iMac from an .iso file using Bootcamp and to be honest I have no clue as to how to accomplish this. I downloaded the Windows 8 .iso file from Microsoft.com, in the past when I installed Windows 7 on my MacBook I basically downloaded the .iso file then I burned it to a DVD and basically installed it but on this case the iMac doesn't have an optical drive which makes it difficult. I have tried to share the drive from a PC laptop but I couldn't make it work and I gave up (I no longer have the MacBook).

Any idea how could I install Windows from an .iso file using Bootcamp?

Can someone show me or direct me to where I can find the information?

Thanks a lot

Open Boot Camp and read the directions (on Page 1)

but the windows7 drivers works in most cases for windows8

I updated my win7 to win8 and just kept the apple win7 drivers

magic trackpad and all the internal stuff works fine for me

Wow, I just finished installing Windows 7.

How hard would it be to do an Upgrade to Windows 8?

Can you have multiple BootCamp partitions in a single machine?

Why I don't see the "This helped me" button?

Thanks a lot!

Here are the steps and issues I ran into during the installation process.

1- Download Windows .ios file from where you bought the Windows lisence

2- Connect a USB drive

3- Open Boot Camp assistent and follow the instrucctions

Boot Camp Steps

  • Leave all options checked
  • Click next
  • Select your .ios file and the USB drive (this will create a bootable disk and will take a while)
  • After the bootable is created your computer will restart and it will start the Windows installation process.

One issue I ran into is that when I was promted to select the partition where I wanted to install Windows and selected the BootCamp partition it basically said that it couldn't install it on that partition because it needed to be in a different format. I solved this issue by selecting the advance options and with the BootCamp partition selected I hit the FORMAT button and everything when fine.

One othe issue which I think was coused by the above issue is that it didn't install the Windows drivers, I couldn't connect to the internet because it was missing the network drivers, thats actually how I found out about the missing drivers. What I did to solve this issue was basically by going to the USB drive used during the installation and going to the WindowsSupport folder and double clicking the setup .exe file (this will install all of the necessary drivers)

Thanks a lot and I hope this helps other people.

Rudegar, When you first installed 8 you posted here regarding the problems you had, specifically with video. Since then you post as if there are no issues, try to be a little more detailed.

Once more, Win 7 drivers used for Win 8 may or may work, it is an individual issue, claiming that it always works encourages a reckless approach (like working without backup, which I do not see you even mention) does not always help.

yes first I let windows update update my amd video driver and only every 3-4th boot into windows8 would be a success otherwise it would crash and then boot back into osx which is default for me

but searched and found some posts in these forums talking about the amd video card driver being the issue

so I rolled back to the win7 driver and now it's much better

sure I get crashed at bootup every now and again but only at bootup for some reason when it get into win8 without problems it's pretty stable

We have different definitions of what constitutes 'working' For me a failure to start is not working, but YMMV.

Was this a straight install of Win8? Where exactly did you download the iso to, desktop, stick, PC? I'm trying to figure out the mini I just bought.

the digital download had a exe file launcher which I ran from inside windows7

it started the proccess up

just had to make sure it didn't boot to osx the times it had to reboot

then I'm not sure I ever owned a computer with windows which have been working 😉

Me neither, so I avoid Windows 🙂
